In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
